Jesus- Lifted Up
John 12:27-36
We’re studying the last week of Jesus earthly life. Our chapter (12:1) begins just 6 days before Jesus is crucified.
John 12:27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
My soul is troubled (deeply troubled / distressed)
Q. Why? A. Cross! Excruciating physical pain of the cross but even more troubling was the wrath of & separation from His Father. (Luke 24 / Mark 14)
When troubled Jesus talked to His Father! Gethsamne.
That’s what we need to do too! Are you troubled?
As Jesus persisted in prayer He understood His purpose. That’s true for us too!
There was… No other way for man or be saved…
John 12:28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
This should be our prayer too…
That we want God to be glorified in our lives! (Lets pray that!)
1 Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do ALL to the glory of God.
When God uses us… we learn in the Scriptures… that we are to be quick to give God ALL the glory! (Matthew 5:16)
Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another,
Psalm 115:1 Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, But to Your name give glory…
Q. “Is God’s Glory safe with you?”
God wants to move in powerful ways….More then we want him to move!!
- Thirties- Q. “Is My Glory safe w/ you?”
- Forties- If I allow you to suffer is My Glory safe with you?
In context- Jesus prayed this in time of great trial / trouble
John 12:28 Father, glorify Your name.
This needs to be our prayer in our time of trial too!
God is most GLORIFIED in our life… NOT in our prosperity but when we’re allowed to suffer…
John 12:28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
John 12:29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
This is the 3rd & final time… we find the Father speaking audibly from heaven in the New Testament..
- Luke 3 This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
- Matthew 17:5 This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!
- John 12:28 Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again. (Incarnation / death & resurrection)
John 12:30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
Now is the judgment of this world;
It’s at the cross that Jesus took the judgment that the world deserved! Our Substitute! John 1:29
Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
It’s a at the cross that Jesus defeated satan!
Colossians 2:13 He has made you alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them triumphing over them in it.
Understand! When we pray… when we come… when we stand… in the victory of the cross… leverage the cross …
Satan must yield! He is a defeated foe!
John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world; Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
2 Corinthians 6:2 Behold, Now is the accepted time; behold, Now is the day of salvation.
Don’t receive the grace of God in Vain!
John 12:32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
And I, if I am lifted up from the earth
The Cross. It’s the cross that draws us! No greater love! (Naked. Suffered. Darkness. Forsaken. Propitiation. One Mediator!)
will draw all peoples to Myself
Naked … for all humanity! Every tribe, tongue, nation!
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: Worthy is the Lamb; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
John 12:34 The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
John 12:35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
This is Jesus final Invitation before He dies…
Q. Have you believed? In such a way… son of light?
John 8:12 I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
1 Peter 2:9 You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Q. Have you believed Jesus in such a way that you have become a son of light!
John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, He gave the right to become children of God.
Isaiah 55:6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; And to our God, for He will abundantly pardon
