Timing Is Everything
John 7:1-9
1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.
After these things
A 6 month gap took place between ch. 6 & ch. 7.
Ch. 6 occurred before Passover (March /April) 32AD
Ch. 7 occurs at the Feast of Tabernacles (Sep/Oct.) 32AD
Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him
It was not a lack of courage that caused Jesus stay in Galilee. Rather… An awareness of the Father’s perfect timing. It was not time yet.
Jesus’ life was NOT random, He lived according to Fathers sovereign, perfect timing and direction.
Our lives are NOT random either! Good works!
2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.
John 7 has three time divisions:
1. Before the Feast (v.1-9)
2. In the midst of the Feast (v.10-36)
3. On the last day of the Feast (v. 37-52)
Feast of Tabernacles/ Booths
Is a 7 day Feast from the 15th to the 21st of Tishri (Sep.-Oct.). This year it was Sept 23-30. / October 13-20, 2019
According to Josephus, this feast was the most popular of the 3 Jewish feasts (Passover, Pentecost, & Tabernacles).
During this week the Jewish people build makeshift structures (“booths” or “tabernacles”) of light leafy branches to live in for the week. (Remember)
The Feast of Tabernacles was known, in Jesus day, for the daily water-drawing and nightly menorah lamp-lighting to which Jesus makes reference
If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me & drink. John 7:37
I am the Light of the world” John 8:12
2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.
3 His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
“You can’t be famous when you hide like this! If you’re so great, prove it to the world!” (Living) John 7:4
5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him.
Matthew 13:55 James, Jospeh, Simon and Jude
Significant- They didn’t become believers till after the… Cross & Resurrection of Jesus.
Jesus must have been the nicest, kindest brother that ever lived….
UNDERSTAND
Being nice and kind doesn’t lead people to FAITH in Jesus!
It’s only the CROSS and RESURRECTION that saves people!
6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.
A LIFE VERSE for me!
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.
John 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you
8 You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.” 9 When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.
Jesus lived his life according to the Fathers perfect timing!
Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman…
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on Sunday March 30, 33 AD. (March 5th 444 BC – March 30th 33 AD )
Luke 19:41 Now as He drew near the city, He wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your PEACE! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.
Matthew 24:44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Jesus lived his life according to the Fathers perfect timing!
That’s how we should live our lives too! (Example for us)
John 2:4 My hour has not yet come.
John 7:6 My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready
John 7:8 My time has not yet fully come
John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come
John 17:1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come.
